Álcali Will Eliminate Chimneys in 4 Years

Industria del Álcali, a company specialized in the inorganic chemical industry, is implementing a multi-year investment plan totaling nearly 200 million pesos, aimed at eliminating the visibility of water vapor emitted by its calcium chloride plants located in the western industrial corridor in García, Nuevo León.

Although these emissions pose no risk to employees or the public, the company plans to eliminate them within no more than four years, starting with the first chimney next year. The emissions consist essentially of air and water, and are measured by laboratories accredited by the Mexican Accreditation Entity (EMA) and approved by PROFEPA, fully complying with environmental regulations.

These emissions are mostly visible during cold and humid weather conditions, as the vapor emitted at over 50 degrees Celsius contrasts with the ambient temperature, creating a trail that takes longer to dissipate. In warm and dry conditions, the air absorbs the vapor more quickly.

“We’ve begun engineering and selecting cooling equipment to carry out the plan progressively. By summer 2026, we will eliminate the first of four chimneys. Once this solution is tested, we’ll replicate it for the remaining three, completing the process no later than 2029,” said Jorge Ceceña Romo, General Director of Industria del Álcali.

This initiative continues the company’s environmental investment plan, which began in 2020, when 17 chimneys were removed from its production plants. Industria del Álcali currently employs over 1,000 workers.

The company has not limited itself to environmental protection investments—it has also played an active role in the García community. Each year, Álcali awards five scholarships to outstanding high school students to support their technical university studies. Additionally, the company has rehabilitated a park in a neighboring neighborhood and contributed to tree-planting campaigns in the area.

In times of crisis, Álcali has proactively supported the community with water donations, such as during Tropical Storm Alberto, which left several neighborhoods in García without water supply for weeks. The company also provided support to Firefighters and Civil Protection during efforts to contain the March wildfires.
